For most farmers, growing crops and raising cattle isn’t just a job. It’s a way of life. It’s a passion. You take it seriously, and you want others to take it seriously, too. More and more these days, farmers are falling under the microscope for their practices. Whether it’s using GMOs, the way you house your livestock, the feed you use, consumers around the U.S. are watching what you’re doing. Their main concern: food safety.
Tomorrow, the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Association (USFRA) is hosting The Food Dialogues: New York. The event will include a series of back-to-back panel discussions designed to answer Americans’ questions on some of today’s most provocative topics related to food, including antibiotics and biotechnology, and bring together farmers, ranchers, industry experts, pundits and media. The Food Dialogues is a site created and maintained by USFRA. It’s free to join and offers farmers an opportunity to share their knowledge. It offers consumers a place to learn about agriculture and farming and ranching. There are videos, infographics and articles on a plethora of topics affecting both farmers and consumers, from biotechnology to animal welfare to food safety to water quality.
I recommend joining the Food Dialogues. It’s of no cost to you, and it’s a great resource for reaching out to the consumer audience to let them know you’re passionate about farming, AND about the safety of the products you grow and raise. And don’t forget to tune into the livestream of The Food Dialogues: New York. It’s important to hear what consumers are saying, so you know what to say to consumers.
Telling the story of agriculture and what you do is important, and so is listening to what others think that story is. Be an agvocate.
