DEKALB® Corn Continues to Build National Momentum

Marketplace Growth Reflects Farmer Confidence.

ST. LOUIS, Mo., April 15, 2008 - With so much riding on yield, farmers want to be confident in their seed decision. That's one reason, heading into the 2008 planting season, that more farmers are planting DEKALB® corn, and planting it on more of their acres.

The DEKALB brand has seen six consecutive years of market share gains in the U.S. corn seed market, more than doubling its presence in the last five years due to performance. For this season, it will represent nearly a quarter of all corn hybrids planted.

Jason Hoag, DEKALB Marketing Manager, said the brand's momentum is directly related to consistent yield gains experienced in recent years by farmers. "Our researchers tap into one of the world's largest corn germplasm pools to find higher-yielding, exclusive genetics that result in strong roots and strong yields for farmers here in the U.S.," he said.

Farmers who plant DEKALB also benefit from access to the industry's most advanced biotech traits. Data from nearly 1,700 on-farm field trials last season showed an average yield advantage of more than 14.6 bushels per acre for DEKALB YieldGard VT Triple® compared to Pioneer varieties with Herculex® Xtra.

"This performance shows the powerful and tangible results that come about when elite germplasm and biotechnology combine," Hoag said.

Hoag said historically, DEKALB has had a strong presence in the northern Corn Belt. However, in recent years, it has also been picking up significant momentum in the Central Corn Belt, which is helping to fuel the brand's overall, rapid growth.

Monsanto forecasts that the DEKALB brand momentum will continue into the next decade. "As a company focused one hundred percent on agriculture, we are committed to helping farmers be successful," Hoag said. "We appreciate the loyalty of our farmer customers who are benefiting from stronger agronomics, higher yields and better peace of mind."

IMPORTANT: The following information is current as of April 2008: YieldGard Plus, YieldGard Rootworm with Roundup Ready Corn 2 and YieldGard Corn Borer with Roundup Ready Corn 2 are grandfathered for import and use in processed feed in the European Union (EU). YieldGard Plus with Roundup Ready Corn 2, YieldGard VT Rootworm/RR2 and YieldGard VT Triple are neither approved nor grandfathered, and there is zero tolerance for these traits in processed feed imported in the EU. Growers of all products bearing the Market Choices mark must talk to their grain handler to confirm the handler's buying position for grain from these products. It is a violation of national and international law to move material containing biotech traits across boundaries into nations where import is not permitted.

Always follow grain marketing and insect resistance management requirements, and read and follow pesticide label directions. Roundup Ready® crops contain genes that confer tolerance to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup® agricultural herbicides. Roundup agricultural herbicides will kill crops that are not glyphosate tolerant. YieldGard products are not yet registered in all states.
