For decades, Illinois farmer Chuck Trainor only fall-applied his nitrogen fertilizer. But four years ago, he began dividing the total application into two treatments. First he applied in the fall, then he topdressed a quarter of his nitrogen in late June, just as corn plants begin rapid uptake.

“Right away, the Trainors could see the yield benefit,” says their crop consultant, Chris Adkins, South Central
