Herbicide-fungicide mix combines convenience, yield protection

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. – Applying postemergence herbicides to V5 corn has been a longtime management practice for many farmers. However, more are adopting what some consider an unconventional technique: applying a herbicide-fungicide tankmix at the V5 growth stage to control late-season weeds and early-season diseases in the same pass.

Jeff Springsteen, Bayer CropScience marketing manager for corn and soybean selective herbicides, says, “In addition to saving farmers time and money, a tankmix of Laudis® herbicide with Stratego® YLD fungicide helps reduce labor needs and equipment wear, while also preserving and enhancing yield potential.” The table above illustrates this yield advantage by comparing the yields of a weed-free check to fields that had V5 applications of Laudis and a tankmix of Laudis and Stratego YLD. The study, which included 16 field trials in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio and South Dakota, concluded fields treated with the unique mix averaged a 15.1 bu/A increase over weed-free fields.

The Laudis-Stratego YLD combination provides economic benefits both on and off the field, as producers can earn up to $3.04 per acre back in cash-equivalent points through the Bayer CropScience Innovation Plus Program when they purchase both products.
