Eye on Crops, Aug. 19, 2011

On Saturday, Aug. 13, our farms received a range of 0.35-0.65 in. of rain. Local corn [3] development is anywhere from R3, or milk stage, up to the R5, or dent stage.  Most soybean [4] fields range from R3 (beginning pod growth) up to the R6 (full seed growth).

The local closing bids for Aug. 18 were $7.10 for nearby corn, $6.92 for new-crop corn, $13.49 for nearby soybeans and $13.31 for new-crop soybeans.

Here in Mato Grosso, Brazil the harvest of the secondcrop of corn – safrinha – is 99.2% complete.  Production is 8% below what was projected earlier in the year.  The average productivity is 95 bu./acre.
