HOUSTON - Shell Lubricants has announced that Shell Rotella® T motor oil with Triple Protection(tm) technology has recently been approved as meeting two manufacturer specifications for diesel engines used in construction, agriculture and other applications. In conjunction with the existing Caterpillar performance credentials (ECF-3, ECF-2 and ECF-1-A), the gaining of formal approvals from engine makers MTU and Deutz continues to strengthen the case for using for Shell Rotella® T with Triple Protection(tm) in both off-road and on-road vehicles and machinery. The exceptional range of performance claims and approvals offered by Shell Rotella® T provides operators of fleets with mixed engines and/or operators with both on- and off-highway equipment a single motor oil solution for their vehicles.
The new approvals from MTU and Deutz compliment each other: MTU is a leading supplier of high horsepower engines used in applications such as those used in mining equipment and large dump trucks. Deutz supplies compact engines to a wide range of agricultural and construction equipment makers. In detail:
The Deutz DQC III-05 Approval - Oils meeting this specification are required for use in Deutz diesel engines with closed crankcase ventilation commonly found in light- or heavy-duty construction and agricultural equipment and machinery that are air-, oil- or water-cooled and may also be used in Deutz diesel engines commonly found in smaller construction and agricultural machinery that require the use of DQC I-02 or DQC II-05. Oils meeting the Deutz DQC III-05 specification may also be used in closed crankcase ventilation diesel engines used in specific mining, power generation, railroad and marine applications. Shell Rotella® T with Triple Protection(tm) technology is the only motor oil approved for Deutz DQC III-05 that is widely available in the U.S. market.
The MTU Oil Category 2 Approval - Oils meeting this specification are required for MTU engines and DDC engine series 2000/4000 found in large off-highway equipment used in heavy construction, agricultural and mining equipment and machinery that require a single- or multi-grade motor oil. In addition, Shell Rotella® T with Triple Protection(tm) technology may be used in power generators and large ship engines that require a motor oil that meets MTU Oil Category 2.
"As Shell Rotella® T motor oil with Triple Protection(tm) technology continues to meet new specifications for off-highway equipment and machinery, it is easier for customers to find engine oils for specialized applications," said Walt Silveira, U.S. Technical Manager, Shell Lubricants. "Additionally, it is now possible to stock a single motor oil for use in on-highway truck engines and a number of off-road applications."
Introduced in mid-2006, Shell Rotella® T motor oil with Triple Protection(tm) technology provides enhanced engine protection, cleanliness and compatibility with exhaust after-treatment devices such as diesel particulate filters (DPFs). The advanced formulation, representing the largest advance in Shell's engine oil technology in 30 years, meets the latest API CJ-4 specifications for heavy-duty diesel engine oils and the latest specifications of engine manufacturers. . Shell Rotella® T with Triple Protection(tm) technology provides on average 50 percent greater wear protection (ranging from 27% to 88% reduced wear) than the previous formulation as demonstrated in industry standard tests and is supported by over 20 million miles of on-highway service using current generation engines, in which significantly lower iron wear was observed.
